July 24, 2019 (Oban, Glenfinnan, Ft. Williams, Inverness)
Recap of the day –
Today we drove to the Glenfinnan monument where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard thus beginning the Jacobite Rising in 1745. The drive was glorious with continuous views of mountains and Lochs. We even saw a steam engine passenger train, through the trees, heading to cross the very same Glenfinnan Viaduct the Hogwarts Express crosses to and from school. It was only a short trek up a path to view the monument and the viaduct from above. We then drive to Fort William for lunch and a little shopping before settling into our rooms in Inverness. Tomorrow we will take a boat ride on Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle.
The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire, Scotland. Located at the top of Loch Shiel in the West Highlands of Scotland, the viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the waters of Loch Shiel.
These next several are of the Glenfinnan monument and the view from the viaduct. The loch here is the place where the tri-wizard tournament took place, the place where Harry Potter ran his fingers in the water while riding the hipogriff. It’s also the same place Hogwarts was superimposed on the mountain for the movie. It was pretty exciting.
Viewing the locks built in 1803 provided jobs and encouragement –
On our way to Inverness, we took a snack stop and saw this boat going through the locks –
