We will drive to the archaeological site of Corinth and visit its ruins. The ancient site lies on a narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to mainland Greece. The Apostle Paul stayed in Corinth a year and a half. According to Acts, it was in Corinth that Paul, after being rejected by the Jews, first turned to the Gentiles (Acts 18:6). A canal through the isthmus of Corinth was begun under Emperor Nero in 67 A.D. Wielding a gold shovel, Nero himself was first to break ground, but the canal was not completed. Up to the 12th century, ships were dragged on rollers across the isthmus. In the ruins of Corinth, we will see the Acrocorinth where the Temple to Aphrodite was built, the 6th century B.C. Temple of Apollo, one of the oldest stone temples in Greece. Also, we will view the Bema, within the Roman Forum, and the ruins of the Peirene Fountain. North of the theater is the sanctuary of the god of healing with a small temple.
